Mother and Daughters Tramp 2,746 Miles Across Country

Published in the Anderson Daily Bulletin
October 1, 1919

Mrs. Marguerite Charter and her pretty daughters, Marguerite, twenty one (left)  and Phyllis, nineteen (right), photographed in New York after the completed a 2,764 mile hike across the country from Seattle, Wash.  The long tramp was not made by the Charter family, who hail from England, to dodge the high cost of living. They did it for the sole purpose of seeing America and studying Americans.  Evidently they have converted on both scores.  "For," Mrs. Charter said, "we are Americans henceforth.  We have found you Americans the brainiest people on earth. And we have studied them all for, previous to this hike, we walked through France, England, Belgium, Ireland, and Holland.  The Charters were five months lacking two days on the trip across the United States.
